Catherine Forshall Solo Exhibition - 10 Jun - 11 Jul 2019

Scottish artist Catherine Forshall is one of the most exciting coastal painters working in the UK today.

This new exhibition, the fourth at Flying Colours Gallery, comprises lively, colourful paintings of her greatest inspirations: the shores of Devon and Cornwall.

The coast has long been a source of inspiration in Forshall's work and, over the years, wherever she’s been living, the sea has never been far from her thoughts and artistry. Rock pools, shells, oysters, lobsters and the plant-life that flourish along the shore are all portrayed.

The exhibition coincides with a 7 page article about the artist in Country Living magazine, July 2019 edition

She has exhibited with Flying Colours Gallery since 2010 and her paintings are widely admired and held in private collections in the UK, Europe, Australia and North America.

Based on her travels, the compositions are breath-taking in their complexity, full of symbolism and meaning, and each containing it’s own story and journey.

Shona Barr has exhibited successfully with Flying Colours Gallery for more than two decades. She graduated from Glasgow Art School in the late 1980's and had her first solo exhibition in 1989 when the gallery was based in Edinburgh.
In this 14th solo show Barr returns to familiar subjects, the Scottish landscapes close to home and the vibrant flower paintings for which she is well-known. She also includes paintings from a recent trip to Cumbria, in these her spontaneous brushstrokes and bold use of colour, are as fresh as ever.
Barr has a unique and distinctive style and conveys the changing seasons with aplomb, combining exquisite colour harmonies with bold inventive compositions.

Anthony Scullion RGI Solo Exhibition - 24 Mar - 15 Apr 2011

Anthony Scullion is a highly-rated contemporary Scottish artist who is able to convey intense emotion through his figurative works. He has a unique vision and paints with a light rhythmic touch. Scullion allows space around his subjects giving heightened importance to the figure itself. Following much critical and commercial success during 11 years of exhibiting here, we are looking forward to showing new work by Anthony Scullion in his 5th solo exhibition at Flying Colours Gallery.

Christopher Baker - Solo Exhibition 'Archipelago Collection' - 4 - 18 Mar 2011

In 2009 the award-winning film maker Joanna Hogg (sister of Flying Colours Gallery owner Jane Houldsworth) asked the landscape painter Christopher Baker to play the role of an artist in her film Archipelago, set on Tresco in the Isles of Scilly. The works in this exhibition, carried out during the making of the film both on and off the film set, depict the unique island landscape. They provide a portrayal in oil paint, watercolour and charcoal of an artist's first experience in front of the camera. Archipelago is in cinemas across London and the UK from March 4th.

After showing Pam Hawkes's work successfully at various London art fairs in 2009, we are delighted to be holding a solo exhibition of her work this year. The figurative paintings encompass a narrative angle and she is greatly influenced by religious iconography. Her unusual combination of mixed media (often working in wax and copper leaf as well as traditional oil paint) is key to the originality and success of her paintings.

Flying Colours Gallery is delighted to be mounting an exhibition of new paintings by Claire Harrigan, six years after her last Solo Exhibition with the gallery. In this collection, she focuses on beach paintings made during a trip to the Caribbean and on still life paintings completed on her return home to Scotland. The immediate impact of Claire's work is of heat and light and joy, and the combination of fragmented bold shapes and brilliant colour make her paintings both striking and original.

Six of the Best at Edinburgh International Festival - 18 - 29 Aug 2009

The Edinburgh International Festival presents a rich program of classical music, theatre, opera and dance in six major theatres and concert halls and a number of smaller venues in late summer each year.
The Festival began in 1947, with the aim of providing 'a platform for the flowering of the human spirit'. Right from the start it inspired people to put on shows of their own outwith the official Festival, and soon these grew into the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Since then half a dozen or so more festivals have grown up around it in a 4-week period in August and early September, and collectively these are often known as 'the Edinburgh Festival'.
Flying Colours Gallery was located in Edinburgh from 1986 to 1995 and has now for many years returned to the city for the central fortnight of the Festival. In 2009 the gallery will show 6 of its major artists; Shona Barr, Stephen Mangan, Sandy Murphy RGI RSW, Tim Pomeroy, Anthony Scullion RGI and Ethel Walker.

Lin Osborn Solo Exhibition - 12 - 27 Mar 2009

Lin Osborn was awarded a scholarship to Harrow School of Art and went on to study at Surrey Institute of Art and Design, graduating in 2001 with a BA Hons in Fine Art. She then attended Winchester School of Art where she became increasingly interested in photography.

Osborn uses a series of small detailed photographs to create her original artworks. The subjects are typically ordinary objects taken from everyday life or the natural world and by repeating a series of images the artist is able to change the original isolated context. 'En masse' the images have a power and beauty.

By focusing on topical themes a spirit of time and place is conveyed. In 'Rainbow' for example, Osborn uses single colour formations, placing together images of trivial household objects. The importance of branding on plastic carrier bags is highlighted, introducing an aspect of commercial and social history that is fast disappearing.

In 'Sunflowers' and 'Poppies' the inspiration comes from the subtle differences between apparently identical natural objects. Other works such as 'Doors' have a historical and architectural interest.

The images comprising 'London' convey the variety and importance of the capital city as it is in 2009. Photographs of tourist paraphernalia are cleverly juxtaposed with views of iconic buildings such as Battersea Power Station.

Alastair Gray Solo Show - 6 Burnsall Street - 12 - 27 Oct 2007

Following the success of his previous show Gray returns to the gallery with an equally exciting new collection. In these strong abstract canvasses the artist's imagination has been captured by the contrasting landscapes of Switzerland and New Mexico.

In this body of new works Gray also pursues another interest - man's intervention in the landscape. Industrial scars in the form of pylons and cables lend themselves perfectly to Gray's imagery. The scoring of the canvas, layering of the paint and the oily glazes help create and reinforce the mood of the places he paints.
