Sandy Murphy RGI RSW

Sandy Murphy was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1956. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1976 until 1980, where he was a pupil of Robertson, Shanks and Rae. He then completed a teacher training course and worked as a teacher until 1985 when he became a full time artist.

Painting from his studio on the west coast of Scotland, Murphy is able to respond to the landscape around him. Although his paintings are easily defined, his work leans towards abstraction; the texture of the rich oil paint often becoming as important as the image represented. The main interest here is the relationship between one colour and another. He builds up the surface of the canvas by reworking the paint, sometimes scraping and layering it to achieve the finished result. Murphy’s carefully composed still-life paintings and landscapes are executed with integrity and feeling.

He was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (RSW) in 1996 and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) in 2000.

Flying Colours Gallery will continue to show new works by Sandy Murphy in 2010.

Works range in price from £1,000 - £7,000
